This is the sauna that I built in my back yard ten years ago. Every Sunday my friends come over and we have a sauna followed by a hearty meal. I learned about saunas growing up with some Finnish friends who also had a Nordic ski center- one of the first in the region (Podunk Ski, near Ithaca, NY). The sauna is set away from the house in this little backyard sanctuary I have created with an outdoor shower. Nothing is better than coming out of a hot sauna and cooling off under the stars on a brisk night. I don't have a pond (yet) but in the winter we roll in the snow.

This is my Di Vapor sauna. I got it in December of 2008 and I have loved every minute I've used it.
I got it because I was feeling tired all the time, and hoped it would help. This infrared home sauna has helped quite a bit and I think a lot clearer now.

My friends have been using their homemade outdoor wood fired steam saunas for decades. I finally decided to build my own sauna based on their design. Of course I had to include my own modifications to personalize it. I copied their basic design of a six sided board and bat configuration but put the cedar poles outside of the walls to allow more usable space within. The use of the triangle in the design with 4 foot sides gives about an eight foot diameter sauna. Instead of the open fire pit beneath a recycled water tank to create the steam I used a 55 gallon barrel and a pair of air tanks from a portable compressor installed within the drum. The efficiency of this wood fired barrel stove system is far superior to an open fire pit but is less aesthetic than the open fire. I must warn you that using a tank as boiler for steam can be dangerous if steam pressure is not ALWAYS allowed to escape the tank. I used locally milled cedar and made the bench and flooring from Pine and Douglas fir pallets.

A custom sauna installation takes time. One should never rush into this procedure blind. It will take at least 12 hours to install your sauna properly. Take your time and make sure you have the right tools for the job. When all is said and done, this is what the custom sauna should look like. Everyone will appreciate the extra time that you took for installation, including yourself.
